Mojacar is on the Costa de Almeria close to Costa Calida. It is set in the foothills of Sierra Cabrera. The region has best average temperatures throughout the year in Spain, which averages 12c in winter and 25c in summer. The beachfront is 5km long and has areas of fine white sand and also some coarser areas. The area has become popular with tourists, with many Mojacar Villas and Mojacar Apartments.
There are busy areas and secluded coves, which reach as far as Cabo de Gata national park. The busier beaches have apartments, cafes, bars and supermarkets. There are various activities available such as ultralite fly bys, jets skiing and parachuting. The snorkelling and scuba diving experience is great, swimming in the crystal clear waters and seeing the volcanic rocks and coral reefs which are Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO.
Mojacar Pueblo is a mountain village with Moorish theme to it, With it’s whitewashed houses, winding cobbled streets and courtyards. The highest part of the village is Mirador Castillo where there are great views of the mountains, the village, and the sea. Within the main square there are Church of Santa Maria and the statue of Mojaquera, a lady wearing head covering dress and carrying a water container.
Down towards the sea you come across the old cemetery and where there was a binary wall defending the upper part of the village. Here there is a selection of shops, bars and cafes. There is a busy weekly market on Wednesdays where you can sample and buy local produce, which is situated near town hall with its big tree from the Americas. Puerta de la Almendina a archway leading to the village with the coat of arms of Mojacar, The symbol is thought to be 4500 years old and is an Indalo man holding arc in outstretched arms. Its thought to bring luck and protection and is displayed on many buildings. The Jewish quarter is near by. The local bus runs from the lower to upper levels.
The present day town developed from ancient communities from about 4000 years ago. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and the Moors alike have influenced it. The Moorish Sultans were ousted 500 years ago but had the greatest influence. The old town is more like a Moroccan Village.
